Query fan-out: how Google's AI Mode changes SEO

Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews break one search into many sub-queries — a technique called query fan-out. Here's what it means for your content and how to win at it.

One of the most important shifts in how Google works barely gets talked about outside SEO circles: query fan-out. If you want to be visible in AI search, you need to understand it.

What query fan-out is

Query fan-out is an AI-powered retrieval technique Google uses inside AI Mode and AI Overviews. When you ask a complex question, Google doesn’t just look up that one query. It automatically deconstructs it into multiple underlying sub-queries, runs those, and then synthesises a single, comprehensive answer from the results.

So a search like “best affordable gym in Andheri with personal training” might fan out into sub-queries such as:

  • gyms in Andheri
  • affordable gym membership Andheri
  • personal training Andheri
  • gym reviews Andheri

Google answers each, then merges them into one response — often naming a few specific businesses.

Why this changes the game

In the old model, you optimised one page for one keyword. In a fan-out world, you can be pulled into an answer through any of the sub-queries — or miss out entirely if your content only covers the head term.

That means thin, single-keyword pages lose. Content that thoroughly covers a topic — the main question and its likely sub-questions — wins, because it can be cited across multiple branches of the fan-out.

How to optimise for query fan-out

  1. Map the sub-questions. For each important topic, list the related questions a customer (and therefore the AI) would ask. Cover them on the page.
  2. Go deep, not thin. One comprehensive, genuinely useful page beats five shallow ones competing with each other.
  3. Use clear structure. Question-style headings and concise answers make it easy for the model to extract the right piece for the right sub-query.
  4. Strengthen entities and trust. Fan-out still favours sources the model recognises and trusts — so brand entity strength and genuine reputation matter.
